Acne Vulgaris

Acne vulgaris is the result of inflammation in the skin. It is caused by the changes in the pilosebaceous units. Pimples, spots and zits are commonly referred to as Acne vulgaris. Acne results when the excessive secretion of oils from the sebaceous glands combine with naturally occurring dead skin cells. The oil blocks the hair follicles and it results in acne. This condition is very common during adolescent age but continues to persist under grave conditions. Usually acne tends to disappear in early twenties itself. This is because the oil secretion in sebaceous gland is very active only during adolescent age. With the end of adolescent period, the sebaceous gland also becomes less active.

The face, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms are especially affected by acne. Topical therapies such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and antibiotics are very common treatments for acne. Oral antibiotics and hormonal therapies are also effective in curing acne.
