Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when the skin is exposed to an allergen causing sensitivity or allergy to the skin. The allergic reaction usually takes place within 48 hours of initial exposure to the allergen. The common symptoms include redness, swelling, blistering, itching and weeping. The allergen may not necessarily be a new product. It may be a substance in a product that you have used for several years.

Allergic contact dermatitis is more common in adults. Moreover, there are two kinds of allergic contact dermatitis. They are allergy to poison ivy and poison oak. Your genes determine whether you are allergic to something or not. The common belief that you cannot become allergic to a substance that you are familiar with for many years is not true. You can anytime become allergic to a substance in a product that you have been using for a long time. The most popular treatment for allergic contact dermatitis is a cortisone ointment preparation and capsules such as Epitrex which reduces the condition.
