Halo Nevus

A halo nevus refers to a pink or brown mole surrounded by an area of white or light skin. Generally the halo loses its normal skin pigment or color. This condition is called depigmentation. It is normally seen in young people. After some time, the mole portion becomes flattened and disappears completely. The white area alone stays even if the mole disappears or sometimes the normal skin color may return. A halo nevus is not dangerous or contagious but a warning signal for some disease in the skin.

Halo nevus is the result of an attack of a mole by immune cells. It is common among people with Vitiligo and malignant melanoma. There are dangerous kinds of moles called atypical moles which have increased risk of becoming cancerous. They are common among people with halo nevi. It is recommended to have a yearly complete skin test for those with halo nevi or even single halo nevus to avoid development of atypical moles or malignant melanoma on the skin.
