Lichen Planus

Lichen planus refers to an itchy and stubborn rash. It generally occurs in the wrists, ankles and mouth but can affect any part of the body. It is common among both men and women of all races. This is a non- contagious disease of unknown cause. Also it is not dangerous.

When you have lichen planus, the immune cells which normally attack germs attack skin cells. You can even look at the immune cells attacking the skin cells, if you see lichen planus through a microscope. There is no precise treatment for lichen planus. Sometimes the doctors prescribe Cortisone creams and ointments. They help to decrease local inflammation, swelling, burning and itching. The ointments in particular, help to maintain the moisture. These creams and ointments should be applied in small amounts and massaged gently into the skin. Similarly Antihistamines are helpful in controlling the itching. Mostly the rash caused by the disease disappears in one or two years.
