Perioral Dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis refers to the rash composed of tiny red bumps primarily around the mouth. Sometimes it can also be seen around the nose and other areas of the face. This disease is common among young and middle aged women. It can be caused by prolonged therapy with topical corticosteroids (hydrocortisones), usage of contraceptive pills, cosmetic products, tooth paste containing lauryl sulfate and also by high stress levels.

The affected should not be exposed to sunlight, wind, heat, chlorinated water or even to hot water. The treatment includes oral tetracyclines four times a day for about three weeks. Minocin and doxycycline are also effective treatments. But there is no medicine that requires direct application to the skin available for treating perioral dermatitis. However you should stop using topical corticosteroids.
