Seborrheic dermatitis is a condition caused by hyper active sebaceous glands in the skin. It is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin mostly of unknown origin causing yellow crusted patches on various areas like mid parts of the face, ears supraorbital regions and scalp. It is believed to be caused by a fungal infection and affects sebum- gland rich areas in the skin .It causes redness and itching in those areas.

It can be treated with a mild hydrocortisone -containing cream. Ketoconazole creams and shampoos are also helpful in treating Seborrheic dermatitis. In extreme cases topical steroids are used. In a nutshell, shampoos containing zinc or selenium are the perfect medicine for this condition. Cradle cap is the term used for seborrheic dermatitis in infants. It affects mostly men of middle age. As a final word of caution, frequent shampooing and regular use of anti-fungal creams will help in the prevention of seborrheic dermatitis.
