Stasis Dermatitis

Stasis dermatitis refers to a condition where rashes develop in the lower legs due to poor return of blood to the heart. Usually the inner lower leg is affected much than the outer lower leg. As people age the veins become weak and do not work well. Consequently, the return of blood from the legs to the heart is very poor. This causes the fluid stay in the lower legs resulting in swelling called stasis dermatitis.

At times, the rash turns into a sore causing stasis ulcer. Vaseline is the best medicine for this condition. It can be applied several times a day. In severe cases, the medication is looked for from a trained physician. Tight stockings are prescribed to keep fluid from settling or pooling in the legs. The lower legs should not be injured as it might lead to the formation of ulcers. In case of ulcer symptoms, the doctor should be consulted immediately to get the sores healed.
