OTHER METHODS

For more severe acne or acne that does not respond to usual treatments or creams, further treatment at the doctor or the dermatologist may be needed. During your visit to the doctor or dermatologist, tell him of the acne scar treatments you have tried and the results of those treatments. Based on the type and severity of the acne, the doctor or dermatologist may suggest one of the following options:
  • Laser resurfacing (or laser blemish removal) may be used to treat serious acne scars. The treatment is completed by the doctor or dermatologist, in his surgery. The laser removes the top layer of skin (including the damage caused by the acne), leaving the skin smooth. The procedure can be completed within a few minutes, but some treatments will take up to an hour. After the treatment, it will take up to ten days for the skin to completely heal.

  • Dermal-abrasion is the use of a rotating wire brush or spinning diamond instrument to remove the surface of the skin. A new layer of skin comes up to replace the surface of the skin that has been worn down. Healing for dermal abrasion may take anywhere between ten days and three weeks.

  • A micro dermal abrasion is a mild chemical peel which can help improve the appearance of acne scars. This form of acne scar treatment is usually used when the acne is not very severe.

  • Punch graft is a method used to remove pitted scars. Small portions of skin are taken from soft tissue parts of your body (like the ear lobe) and implanted where there are acne scars in the form of holes.

  • Collagen may be injection below the skin to help replace pores and cells. Steroids may also be injected.
All of these methods need to be tried out after the acne has been healed.

The doctor will need to check whether you have any conditions that have caused the acne breakout or acne scars.

The Best Method for Acne Scar Treatment

There is no one method that is the best when it comes to acne treatment. It all depends on each individual case. Many people may be able to treat their acne successfully with natural acne treatments. Others may need special creams purchased from the pharmacist, or may even need to undergo laser blemish removal at a doctor's office. If you feel that your acne scars are very severe, consult a doctor first to see what he recommends. If your acne scars are not so severe, try treating them first with a natural or medicated acne scar treatment.
